Still stumped by my 1100

I've been learning to pick locks for almost a year now. But my American 1100 still gets the best of me. It just feels gritty even though it's brand new, aside from my picking attempts. I can see from looking into the keyway that it's got plenty of serrations. Anyone got advice on how to go from picking spools to picking serrated pins?
