My venue decided to fly our top packs, have a question about speakon runs...
Post Body

pics of venue if interested. And NO, the left speakers aren't positioned that way... we had moved the stacks out to clean behind them/under the stage. System is all EV (4) T252 tops, (4) MTL-1 Subs, (4) T221M wedges, (1) QRx 212H/75 drum wedge

Anyway, we (technically a few certified riggers) are flying our top packs next week to improve sight lines and throw the sound a bit more even.

Since we are running the speakons up the back wall and through the ceiling, I want to make as few runs as I can. We run our tops in full-range mode. I've heard I can take 4-conductor cable and run 2 different lines from it... basically one run on 1 1- and a second run on 2 2-. The 2 2- run would then be plugged into the 1 1- terminals on a NL4 correct?

Basically I want to streamline the cabling and have the shortest runs. I have our left top packs on one amp channel and daisy chain them together. Same with the right. The back panels have parallel input/thru jacks on them. Am I able to run both the top left and top right runs via one 4-conductor cable?

Tell me if my thought process is wrong here, but can I go:

  • Left amp channel out to one NL4 pinned 1 1- , Right amp channel out to another NL4 pinned 1 1-

  • cable up through the ceiling and into the first box input

  • come out of the first box thru jack and have a jumper cable to the input of the second box

  • come out of the second box thru jack and over to the third box input - this signal would be traveling on 2 2- so on the connector going into the box, I swap the pinning to be 1 1-

  • Finally use a regular jumper from the third box thru to the input of the fourth box.

Also, Can I transfer this over to our subs and/or monitors so I don't have to run 4 lines, I can just run 1 per side?

for our subs, each one gets its own amp channel... so I would just take channel A out to one speakon connector on pinned 1 1- and the channel B out to another speakon connector also pinned 1 1-. Then on the cabinet side, I split it the same way and plug it direct into the inputs correct? Since the subs inputs are going to be about 1.5ft away from each other, I'll have to split the outer shielding so the ends can separate (leaving the individual conductor shielding on of course). is this fine to do? It will be hidden away under the stage. Or would I need to get some heatshrink to go over the 2 conductors for each run?

Sorry about the wall O' text... didn't mean to write a novel!

Edit: BONUS QUESTION... when we fly the tops, how should we position our subs? I'm thinking either how they are but stacked on their sides OR we build them into the stage and put them laying across the front. If we put them across the front, would it be better to evenly space them out... or have one on each corner, and 2 side by side in the middle?
