Question/help providing power to amp racks?
Post Body

So basically, I'm building a system and have a question on how the racks full of amps are powered. The venue where I work has a subpanel breaker box with multiple circuits and junction boxes for all the amps, so this has never been an issue for me. I'm talking about things like this or This.

In the second picture, surely they aren't all plugged into that 15A Rackrider power conditioner right? The load of those amps is way over 15A. Are there multiple 20A or 30A circuits they are tied into? And where/how are they plugged in?

Basically my system is:

  • (4) EV TX2181 2x18" Subs 4ohm 1000/4000W
  • (4) EV TX2152 2x15" Tops 4ohm 1000/4000W
  • (5) EV TX1152FM 15" Monitors 8ohm 500/2000W

Powered by:

  • Subs - (2) EV Q1212 2x1200W @ 4ohm
  • tops - (2) EV Q1212 2x1200W @ 4ohm
  • Monitors - (3) EV Q99 2x900W @ 4ohm / 2x550 @ 8ohm

My understanding is, to find the Amp load, You take the watts divided by the voltage. So 1 of my Q1212 is 1200w/120v = 10A load. Correct?

All said and done, that's 40A for my mains and 13.74A for my monitors.

I have heard of power distros before, but have never worked with them and don't know anything about them. Is a power distro needed to do what I want to do? This system will be set up in a space and left wired up, but I want it to be portable if needed. I would like the power to be self contained within the racks if possible.

TL;DR: How do I power 7 power amps totaling 53.74A load in a rack? I know they can't all plug into a power conditioner as those are only 15A-20A. Do I really need 4-5 power conditioners to do this? and even then, each one of those would need it's own circuit...
