Hey r/livesound, got a bit of a fringe issue that I'm trying to solve. Playing in a band with IEMs, the entire band is great with using IEMs as it makes hearing everything better than open amps and wedges. Except the guitarist. They admit they can hear the band better but feel completely disconnected from their tone. Class A amp, edge of breakup, strat guy.
Have any of you had this issue and found a workable solution? I have tried distancing the mic from the cab, adding a delay to his signal (5 - 6 ms to simulate ear distance), and adding a room mic. None of this seems to answer the issue. We haven't tried a "Ox Box" or IR load attenuation device yet as the good ones are pricey.
If any of you have had this and found a solution, I would love to hear it.
EDIT
We spent a couple hours today and worked a solution out that made the guitarist pleased. We placed an Audio Techinca AT4030 at the front of the cab about 12" back from the cone and aimed about 45 degrees off axis and panned that to his left side about 50%. Then we put another of the same mic on the back of the cab about 12" back and had to phase flip to make it sound full. Mixed that to right side about 50% and mixed until it sounded like an amp in a room. It creates a "space". Almost the sound of a small room / bathroom type effect. The tone is very warm and not ice picked at all.
Thank you all for your suggestions and we also had some good laughs at the one liners too. What a great community here.
