How can I understand literature better?

Post Body

I have been trying to read more recently, but often when I finish my book I find the only thing I think was ā€œthat was a fun readā€ without ever really getting any understanding of symbolism or anything other than superficial aspects of what Iā€™ve just read, while also struggling to even recall a lot of what Iā€™ve just read. How can I be more present when I read and what can I do to understand when something may have a deeper meaning?

For me, annotating my books forces me to think way harder. I know a lot of people donā€™t like writing in their books, which is why i recommend a cheap paperback penguin classic (or something of the sort) for your first read through. This helps me stay far more involved in the story, adding commentary, circling repeated phrases or themes, and underlining exerts that I really liked. I even sometimes tally up in the back of the book how many times a character says a certain phrase if i notice its repeated often, just to make a game of it! Makes me way more into the book and less likely to skim over bits. Hope this helps! Wishing you luck
