Hey guys so, I am reading "East of Eden" for the first time, and I am baffled at how well Steinbeck can create such a sense of terror.
The impact he achieves through his portrayal of Cathy in her introduction chapters is truly astonishing, I was reading it on public transport and I still felt my hair stand on end and gasped audibly when I found out what she does to her family.
Other instances include
- Cathy being taken and beaten to a pulp.
- The description of Cyrus Trask's wife and her suicide.
- The initial tension between the Trask brothers and Cathy.
Sometimes I feel like I'm reading a Horror novel as I'm captivated by Steinbeck's remarkable talent for evoking fear through seemingly effortless prose.
His unassuming style has a way of truly creeping beneath your skin, catching you off guard with unexpected twists and revelations. I really never know what to expect and I'm having so much fun with this book.
Anyway, I just wanted to ramble on a bit about this as and wanted to know if people felt the same way.
Also, are there other novels that make you feel the same way?
