Hello r/lioneltrains!
Some of you may remember this post back in February. While some were wary of a possible scam, I decided to reach out and offer my assistance to this older couple in South Carolina. I ended up communicating with Jaime and John through a few emails at first, and then over the phone, as we went through multiple Excel spreadsheets put together by their family in an attempt to catalog their deceased father's collection. I ended up spending a nice bit of time looking over their countless photos, and I probably pushed the Tandem Associates servers to their limits while checking to see what versions the locomotives and cars were. Turns out, their collection is worth... a lot. I won't disclose numbers, but it's in the tens of thousands.
Once the estate cleared the probate process, they began selling most of it off. Now get this: This sounds ridiculous, but they were able to sell 8 near-mint 736 Berkshires and still have two left. John told me that his father would buy trains, and wrap them up in the box, seal it, and date it. He only ran trains that weren't "shiny enough" to be collected for value.
Anyway, as a thank you for both cataloging the collection and for helping John plan a humongous layout for his basement, they sent me a near-mint 1946 726 (Version 1) with the 773 tender (2426W). I was amazed to see this huge box turn up at my front door today, with a note and everything. This is now the nicest postwar piece I own. Crazy to think there were 11 more 726's on that spreadsheet.
