How do I detect when my phone connects to my WiFi?

I want my home computer to know when I'm at home, and I want to do that by checking if my phone is connected to my home WiFi.
I can use nmap or similar programs to know when my phone is connected to the LAN, but nmap doesn't see the phone if the screen is locked. How do I know if the phone is connected, even when locked? Can it be done?
