Network connected speaker

I want to build a Linux driven announcement system using a few network connected speakers.

I'd like to use Linux to send an audio stream to the speakers using something like gstreamer, and I'd equally like to be able to set the volume of the speakers remotely.

I don't wish to use any proprietary software to control the speakers.

I thought about using the Sonos one devices, but I'm not sure that they adhere to the above requirements.

Could anyone recommend a good network connected speaker please ?
