Taking another look at our in-house virtualization platform in preparation for a hardware refresh next year.
This is an SMB environment, currently running 2 small VSphere clusters-total of about 200 running VMs. All internal services, no customer facing servers in house. Depending on the server backups are dealt with via Veeam, rsync, storage snapshots, etc. Storage is currently Nimble, though I'm liking what I've read about CEPH, but unconvinced how well it will perform.
I'd like to move to an open solution, both from an philosophical perspective, as well as a financial, but it has to still work well. To that end, I'd really like to hear what other people have experienced if you've done this transition recently, or know someone else who has.
And yes, we'll be demoing these options soon-probably a small proxmox cluster next month, to begin with. Just want to know what all I should be looking out for as we test.
Anything in particular to look at or consider when considering this transition?
