I'm running Wayland and Gnome 42, and recently installed Flameshot (a screenshot tool). The good news is that Flameshot 12 has Wayland support! It's actually quite good. The bad news is that the workflow is as follows:
- Press your screenshot shortcut key or combo
- Address pop-up dialog asking for permission (xdg-desktop-portal)
- Select screenshot area, and add annotations (flameshot)
- Save / copy to clipboard
Many people find this to be too many steps. In addition, the native gnome/wayland screenshot tool white-lists itself, so that step 2 is not necessary (good workflow!)
According to the Flameshot developers, they have no control over step 2, as this is implemented as a security feature of Wayland / xdg-desktop-portal.
I agree this is a good general direction for the desktop; however, the current implementation does not have a "remember this setting" option, and therefore becomes annoying very quickly.
Discussion at xdg-desktop-portal
shows that there is interest in developing a "remember this setting" kind of feature, but they do not currently have bandwidth:

Would anyone be able to step up to "close the gap" for all screenshot tools on Wayland? (Flameshot, ksnip, etc.)
