I currently have an iomega NAS with Debian Lenny. Forgive me if that comes off noobish or I am missing information; I have used computers for so long and never understand why Linux is so cool until just the other day when I realised I could use apt-get (only used something like that in Ubuntu) on my freaking NAS (basically an external harddrive nothing special in my mind, until I discovered the amazingness of linux). So I am running sickbeard and httpd on it, but can't really run much else because I can't figure out how to get python2.6 on there, although I know it can be done, and I was wondering if there exists a file server out there that is "green" or "smart" and indexes the files on external harddrives and when someone asks for those files powers on the external to allow the transfer and then powers it off when done. I know that if you disconnect the USB cable on these specific drives it will turn the drive off, so there must be some hack to get it done. Any hints or help or advice telling me I'm insane and should RTFM more would be greatly appreciated!
