Checked out the show at Chicago's Radius last night, holy shit what an experience. The venues Wayne has chosen for these shows all speak the atmosphere he's trying to cultivate, which adds to the sets he is delivering. Radius Chicago is a 2,500-person venue that is one big General Admission floor, and they were half as stiff and uncaring/get-you-in as the venues Wayne could have chosen for this show: United Center or Allstate Arena. Thankfully, he went the intimate route.
When you see rap shows at a big stadium, the experience is tampered. It's watered down because half the venue if not more is seated. You can't dance and turn up in your seats. So the first thing I noticed was how nice the venue was last night, and how it made for a better show overall. Room to move, dance, drink, smoke, be yourself is so underrated.
Now let's talk about the setlist. Fuck's sake, Weezy! I had my doubts going into this one, because rap shows are so hit and miss. You'll either get a lifetime-affirming performance or a set that dampens your spirits. Wayne, thankfully, hit heavy on the latter. He was pulling songs from all 'Carter' records, while giving plenty of attention to his 'Day Ones' who rock with his mixtapes.
I really loved how he didn't have an opener, but he let his Young Money Records crew get some shine in between his sets. Wayne did two sets with YM talent getting a song or two apiece in between, and it felt a lot better than the usual "boring opener no one cares for, then the big performer." I didn't remember much of the YM artists, but they showed up for what little time they were given, appreciate that.
Go to this show if it's in your area. This concert felt like a celebration of a Top 10 all-time rap GOAT. Chicago was an unreal experience, and Weezy brought it. He played for a good 75 minutes, tracks spanning his entire catalog and beyond. He brought out Chance the Rapper last night to sing "No Problem," and I'm sure he has a lot of other guests planned for other stops. If you are on the fence about this one, just go. Bring your friends, bring your papers, and go.
