The only online music journalism site that I can think of that ever acknowledges Lil Ugly Mane is The Fader. Also Fantano. Why is that? LUM's albums never appear on any end of year lists. He gets so much acclaim from in-the-know music fans online, so it's not like they don't know who he is. It's not like his music isn't discussed heavily and is popular among the music community. His only mention on Pitchfork was being featured on Antwon's Rain Dance (all the way back from 2014). Yet other experimental hip hop artists in the same realm like Death Grips and Danny Brown get an article every time they sneeze. It's like all these misic journalists unanimously decided not to cover LUM. And it's not because Ugly isn't on a label. Death Grips haven't been on a label for a lot of their releases. They get insane coverage. And there's no shortage of articles you could write about Ugly Mane. All of his write-ups about mental health, for example. I know, I know... I shouldn't care. But just, why? He's such an endlessly fascinating person in music. If you went by most music sites, you wouldn't even know he existed.
