Many are skeptical about LiS2 following the reveals today. Many were already skeptical, knowing that it wouldn't involve Max and Chloe. And whilst I'm not entirely without skepticism myself, mostly regarding the 'no fixed location' schtick 2 seems to offer, I want to voice a personal feeling that I've seen reflected in a lot of other 'first playthrough' accounts.
Life is Strange S1 made its audience as much as it found it.
On the face of it, there's no way you could describe S1 to me that I'd find appealing. Protagonists are teenage girls, there's some kind of murder mystery, time travel powers, story-driven with no traditional gameplay. I don't find any of these elements particularly compelling. And that's why, despite being aware of the game since 2015, I didn't play it til last month (it's my PLiSD first month anniversary today).
And being honest, I'd never have played it if not for an alignment of coincidences.
- I had my wisdom teeth out, and wasn't really capable of playing a 'normal' gameplay driven game, but needed something to do.
- LiS dropped in the humble monthly bundle, so I had it in my steam library without thinking about it.
- A friend who had suggested other media I never thought I'd like but did had also recommended LiS.
So despite being disinterested, coincidence aligned to make me play LiS and... yeah, now it's my favourite game. And I've read the same notion presented in at least half a dozen first playthrough accounts, people who played the game on a whim or out of boredom instead of interest, and fell in love.
So maybe you're not super keen on the protagonists or the plot based on what we know of LiS2, but I'm pretty confident DONTNOD will convert a whole bunch of skeptics with a relentlessly endearing set of characters, settings and plot... just like they did with S1 and my skeptical ass.
