Over the years through overhearing conversations and watching various media, I've often heard the sentiment that it would be boring to live past the general 80-year lifespan that humans currently have. Or, if that is not said explicitly, people seem to be generally ok with the idea of finding a life partner, growing old with them and dying at about 80 or so. And my question is, why?
I know the obvious answer is that there's nothing they can do about it so it's just accepted as a part of life but even that doesn't make too much sense because something like cancer, which doesn't really have a cure and can only be treated, is also a part of life but people are not okay with it and do everything in their power to stop it. But aging has so many negative side effects and it affects every person living.
The most obvious being physical. As you age you lose all of your youthful strength and energy and something as simple as bending down to pick something up becomes an ordeal after you get to be a certain age. Also, I know this probably sounds vain, you lose your good-looks and you become flabby and wrinkly and not pleasant to look at. Sure, you can look good for your age if you take care of yourself but you will never look as good as someone in their 20s or 30s. But I think the worst part of aging is that you constantly live with a timer above your head.
You can't do everything the world has to offer in less than a century. If you have enough money, you could probably manage to visit every country in the world during your lifetime but it would, by necessity, have to be superficial because there's no way you could spend at least a decade everywhere to get a good feel for a place. There are so many hobbies and career paths that take years or decades to learn and master and there's no way you could even do a fraction of them so you would have to only choose one or maybe two that you want to do. All the languages you will never get to learn. Then there are the future inventions and discoveries that you will never get to experience because you die before they are discovered and invented or you're too old to properly enjoy them. There are many other things too but I think that's enough to get the point across.
And all that was based on a best case scenario "perfect life" (being born into an obscenely wealthy family, having good health, being around people who love and support you, etc). Now imagine all the people who don't live like that. The people who made mistakes in their youth or later but can't correct them because it's too late, or someone who lived their entire life doing what others wanted and only found their true passion in their golden years, or people who live with chronic illnesses that never get a chance to do anything they want.
So, even if you take death as an inevitability that you just have to suck up and deal with, I can't see how it is in any way something you can be satisfied with. There is so many negatives that come with living for the short lifespan that we have.
