Question regarding resolution and performance

I asked a while ago if lowering the resolution could positively affect battery life and the consensus was that unless you're playing a ton of games, there probably wouldn't be much noticeable difference in battery if at all.
So I thought about it some more and had another question. Could lowering the resolution positively affect the phone's performance since it's pushing less pixels, possibly running cooler, or whatever?
