Of course, I'm speaking about Sylvia Rivera.
There was a post today about bigots looking to remove the T from LGB. Inevitably, comments started pointing out that it was trans people who were at the forefront of the fight for queer rights.
However, the vast majority of the comments either mentioned Marsha alone by name or, more confoundingly, credited black trans women exclusively with kicking off the pride movement at Stonewall. This, even though Sylvia was also a leader and the crowd was largely made up of both black and brown people.
And many mentioning Marsha seemed to do so because she's credited with throwing the first brick/shot glass (even though she's admitted she didn't get there until after the riots had started). Even if we ignore that, crediting Pride to her alone is a huge disservice to everyone else there who also raised hell, especially Sylvia who is often mentioned in the same breath as Marsha.
I get that many of the Stonewall leaders were Black LGBTQ women, but "many" is not "all" and the rioters were also brown. So what gives?
At a time when the history of queer POC is being reclaimed from whitewashing, attributing Stonewall exclusively to black trans women feels almost like a different kind of erasure, this one aimed at brown people.
