Need help from trans people

A friend of mine's son, 16FtM, is going through hell right now. Depression, anxiety, not sleeping etc. He is raising him as a single dad, I have known him for decades and I want to help them.
How can I help? What can I do or say? What should I not do or say? I think they are getting support from LGBT in their city but I am unsure. I just want to do something but feel lost.
