The Family Research Council, an anti-choice anti-equality anti-LGBTQ anti-science Christian Nationalist lobby, cataloged all the reported instances of self-identified cis women "feeling uncomfortable" during what they called "Bathroom Incidents" from 1999 to 2017 to prove gender neutral publicly accessible restrooms would lead to a surge of predatory "men in dresses" targeting women and girl in "women's spaces". Throughout an 18 year study they found fewer than one "Bathroom Incident" out of presumably hundreds of millions of visits to publicly accessible restrooms across the US per year. The majority of those alleged incidents involved cishet men engaged in sexual predation. Three of those incidents involved a self-identified cis woman "feeling uncomfortable" due to the presence of a perceived trans woman. Not threatened by, not attacked by, just the presence of a perceived. After it was suggested that this study negated their moral panic it was deleted from their website.
I could go into detail about
- How this 'study', like most biased studies of sexual violence, doesn't include society's long held tradition of ignoring, celebrating, fetishizing, and romanticizing sexual predation committed by cis women,
- How, when compared to how many sexual predators are successfully accused, charged, arrested, or convicted, there's no reason for predators to disguise themselves,
- How comprehensive sex education reduces systemic sexual violence,
- How police officers in over half the country can legally sexually assault suspects,
- How queer people suffer sexual violence at a higher rate than cishet people per capita,
- How queerphobic policies, rhetoric, and fearmongering pushes queer people and queer youth into survival sex work,
- How violent crime has been steadily declining for decades,
- How sexual predators almost exclusively target 'safe victims' they know,
- How the vast majority of perceived trans women in "women's spaces" are nongender conforming cis women who are often threatened into sharing their private medical information, or,
- How many moral panics have been framed around protecting white cishet women from the perceived "threat" of hypersexual minorities.
