I’ve been DMing for about three years if I add up my time. I lean heavily on improvisation and going with the moment. Did I have a huge fight planned yeah but the players decided to try and persuade the vagrant half elves who had decided to rob you. Offer them work exterminating an infestation of plague ridden Kobolds that have decided to ransack a church. Just an off the top example of me.
