Some thoughts on the first two episodes of 'Resurrection' (American adaptation)
Post Body

I just binge-watched Les Revenants on Netflix, so all of this is pretty fresh in my head as I'm watching Resurrection (they're 2 episodes in). It's clear already that the American show can't touch the French one.

  1. The way families dealt with the returned in the French version felt more appropriately paced and realistic. The American version makes some really stupid leaps and feels like it's jumping the gun (i.e., in the second episode the mom takes the returned boy to a playground. The other mothers gather up their children and leave...but how would they have heard about this? There's nothing to indicate that the "word" is out, and the boy supposedly died 32 years ago, so others shouldn't recognize him).

  2. Some of the actors are kind of shitty (Elaine sticks out as the worst offender). Not all, but some. I thought everyone in Resevants was spectacular, though.

  3. The episodes hinges really heavily on themes of faith. Granted, Resevants covered this too, but it felt hammered in the pilot ep.

  4. Unrealistic involvement from the FBI agent (or whatever agency) played by Omar Epps. I think Epps is a good actor but his character fits awkwardly in the show. He's assigned to ferry an unidentified kid from an airport to a home and instead he just sticks around and independently investigates the entire phenomenon? Resevants had a much more realistic involvement from authorities that evolved organically.

  5. They're failing to make me care about any of the characters. They all seem fairly generic.

  6. The series seems to take some small details from Resevants and half-heartedly include them, but without the original spirit/intent. For instance, Jacob won't speak at first, like Victor, but the silent act is dropped as soon as he gets to his parents, so it feels needless and token.

  7. The characters seem to remember their deaths (or remember eventually). I liked that the returned in Resevants were as clueless as everyone else.
