Wig tips from an experienced wig wearing lesbian
Post Body

Hi everyone! This is a modified posting from a transfemme fashion advice subreddit that I think y'all would be interested in too. I think some people forget that you don't just have to cut or color your hair, you can hide it under a wig and get the same effect. So here is the guide, modified to suit it to sapphics of all or no gender:

First: How does one put a wig on? I know for many of including myself, we have long hair. I've helped so many femmes of all sorts wear wigs. My friend has super thick hair down to the small of her back and I helped her hide it perfectly under, among other wigs, super short pixies. While there are many ways to put on a wig cap and then wig, this is a good overview for a few of them, especially how to use a wig cap. Experiment with what functions best for you.

Second: the forehead. A lot of femmes place their wigs too low on their forehead. To find out where your hairline should be, place a hand just above your eyebrow. Depending upon your hairline, the correct placement should either be 3 fingers up on your forehead or four.

Third: hard front VS lace front. Hard fronts are wigs that are just that, a hard front. They don't have lace fronts which mimic hair growing out of your head. For hard fronts, get one with bangs. Having one without bangs looks very fake since it's very harsh and no Human's hairline looks like that.

Fourth: Parting. Most cheap wigs will have hair parting that looks very fake and costumy. I honestly would suggest you just don't buy them period but if you already have one you like, wear a hat or beanie over it to cover the parting. Plucking it and covering it up with concealer MAY do the trick but I have never been able to do that myself.

Fifth: quality. I know a lot of us are poor, shit sucks out there. However, saving up for a quality wig or just finding cheap good quality wigs helps. I have found a $400 dollar wig on eBay, gently used, for $90. You should also be on the lookout for discounts on websites. I'm going to provide links to good quality mid tier priced wig shops that I've bought from and outlet/discounted sites. Plus, a lot of wigs marketed towards Black women and femmes are good quality for pretty cheap as well.

Paula Young Wigs: good but not great quality at a pretty affordable price. I have multiple wigs from them and I really like them all.

The Wig Company: a bit more pricy on the whole but still good quality. I've enjoyed the few wigs I've purchased from them. Plus they have an outlet section which always includes heavily discounted wigs.

Vogue Wigs: I got my first wig from them and they have a huge selection and range of prices. They also have a rewards program which is cool.

Wig Outlet: deeply discounted high end wigs, hence the outlet. I haven't purchased any from them yet because I found even cheaper wigs of the same styles on eBay. however I have bought many of the wig models and styles sold on this sight and they are universally great quality.

Uptown Wigs: I just got my first wig from them (if you're curious it's the Textured Pixie by Sherri Shepherd). The prices are incredibly cheap and based on the reviews on the site as well as my own experience the wigs are good quality and cheap.

Sites to stay away from:

Temu. It's fast fashion and incredibly cheap. You get what you pay for. Ditto for Aliexpress and Shein.

Amazon: this is less clear because if you know the style and color of the wig you want (ie by looking it up on other sites) then it's fine. But a lot of Amazon exclusive wigs are very cheap looking and bad quality. I've been (metaphorically) burned before by a purchase.

Sixth: how does one wash and care for your wig? You fill up a basin or sink with room temperature or a tad cooler water. If your wig is Human hair, then you can use regular shampoo. If it's synthetic, you need to use specially formulated shampoo for synthetic hair. This is the brand I use and I love it. Whatever you use, pour in the shampoo and swirl it around until it is mixed in the water basin. Then, place your wig in and swish it around to get as much of the shampoo filled water in the wig. Wait 15-20 minutes. Next, take out the wig. Rinse it under a faucet to wash out any remaining shampoo. DO NOT BLOW DRY IT. Take the wig and place it on a mannequin headand put it somewhere to drip dry. I like to use my shower (not while using it) and put the head with the wig on the floor so it can drip dry without getting anything wet that isn't supposed to be wet. I'll leave it overnight. The next morning, gently run a comb through the wig to get it back to the style it was before you washed it.

Seventh: HAVE FUN. Experiment with different hair lengths, styles, and colors. I love having a red beehive one day, a black pixie the next day, and a red sleek bun the third. I love wigs, they make me feel like myself more than anything else. Wigs are some of my favorite things and I've had a lot of fun playing around with wigs with my friends of all genders. You are no less authentic when you wear a wig and if like me you feel MORE like yourself in a wig, there is no shame in that. Be your best self and have your best hair too!

Anyways please feel free of course to ask questions. I hope this helps.
