I’m always accidentally waking up my gecko, can I put a towel over the front of his cage?

My little gecko boy is pretty shy, but loves to sleep right at the entrance in his hide. Everytime I come in my room, it wakes him up and somewhat startles him :( would it be okay to put a towel over the front of his cage so me coming in doesn’t bother him so much?
