Cracked Theory: "Mask of my Own Face" was Neil's "27 Club" song
Post Body

So for context:

The 27 club is an unofficial group of celebrities - mostly performers and musicians - who all die at the age of 27, with one of the most notable members being Kurt Cobain, who played MTV unplugged as his last concert before committing suicide in 1994. During that concert, he played several deep cuts, and covered "The Man Who Sold The World", a song originally done by David Bowie, and talks about Bowie's feelings with the entertainment industry at that exact point in his life. The song talks about the singer encountering a man who was believed to have "died alone a long, long, time ago", to which the man answers that he "never lost control" and that he's "the man who sold the world", implying that the public only knows his facade.

"Mask of My Own Face" is a song by Lemon Demon (Neil Cicierega), released in 2014 on the album "Nature Tapes", that talks about a man who would wear a mask of his own face while acting out a string of shenanigans under the guise of being a man disguised as himself.

My theory states that Neil Cicierega published the song when he was 27 in a meta-commentary.

...

To "put on a mask" can imply putting up a front, a facade, a fake image; something that David Bowie and Kurt Cobain - as well as many a performer - know how to do all too well. In "Mask of My Own Face", he makes a mention that he'd have fun tearing off the mask to reveal what he was actually like, with his supposed haters failing to do the same with themselves, revealing that the "him" they knew was a farce, but the "them" that he knew was all too real.

Neil was born August of 1986, and with "Nature Tapes" being released in March of 2014, he would have only been 27. While all the celebrities that are in the "27 Club" are 27, there are many who died within the year of their 28th birthday.

...

Either I've been thinking about this too much, or I've cracked the code.
