So i finally got my office all picked up, and I know a few other people had questions on the shelving. This isn't really a "lego" post, but more of an informational post so people can avoid my errors.
It is the Elfa Shelving from container store. In reviewing it, the shelving wasn't the problem (though, I probably wouldn't recommend it for heavy lego storage for the reasons I'll describe below)
The way the shelving works is there is a central "bar" at the top that is mounted into the wall. Rails are then hung onto the bar, and pieces come off the rails to support the shelves. There are some anchors to add to the rails on the way down, but those aren't really load bearing, more to keep the rails straight. And to be fair to the shelving, they did their job. Installer error caused the issue.
Many "helpful" commentators noted that i should be sure to install into studs. While they are correct, the issue is that I am in Florida, so the exterior walls are all cinderblock with maybe an inch of plaster over it. To install, I chose conical anchors for masonry. And frankly, they WOULD have worked....if they were installed directly into the cinderblock. The issue is the anchors were halfway into the concrete and halfway into the plaster. So, over time, the weight of the shelving unit pulled the screws down and they dug into the plaster. Over time, it pulled the anchors slowly out of the concrete. At some point, a screw/anchor combo came completely out of the concrete which, of course, added more stress on the rest. At some point, enough of the screws were pulled out the entire top bar failed and, of course, down came everything.
So, while I can say....the Elfa Shelves THEMSELVES were not to blame, it was my choosing the screws poorly. That being said, the shelves DO put alot of weight on one spot. If you choose to go that way, for the love of god, get that top bar installed properly. I personally won't be using them again, at least not for Legos.
