Im a big fan of LoK, the worldbuilding and characters are sick but it feels like the villains especially Zaheer and Kuvira drag it down. Zaheer for one has no real philosophy phy other than "chaos good" which would make actual anarchists cringe.
Not only does Zaheer fail to attempt real institutional change through a mass popular movement, instead opting to take out the earth queen without confronting the power structures that enable her, they also don't really espouse the same beliefs like actual anarchists. Zaheer sounds more like a 14 year old whos into punk music than a real anarchist thinker. there's no real critique of the state as an extension of capitalist interests, nor a discussion of any viable replacement for the state ie. self governing autonomous communes. Real anarchists don't advocate for chaos, they seek to dismantle hierarchy while mantaining human cooperation and organisation.
The thing is a proto anarchic society does exist in the world of avatar, the air nomads. The air nomads don't really have a state, they have equal access to resources according to their needs, they essentially live in a big commune.
I'm not a professional writer by any means but if I were to talk about things I'd change first I would have Zaheer draw more clearly on mutualistic thought, point out the poverty that not only the Earth Kingdom but also Republic City enables due to the influence of capital. Point out the corruption and political influence people like Varrick hold within capitalist society. Second I would have Zaheer be confronted with the fact that change must come from the bottom up. Just cause you take out the Earth Queen doesnt mean the state doesn't still hold power. Have Zaheer cut off the head from the snake but realise that nothing really has changed, the Earth Queen has simply been replaced by another figurehead. It doesn't really make sense that the entire Kingdom collapses from the death of one monarch. As a conclusion to the season Id like to see Zaheer and Korra through a dialogue realise that change must come from the people and you can't just take out the figureheads on top of society and assume the institutions will collapse with them. Have Zaheer support the new air nomad society from Earth Kingdom attack for example. Have him help build a self sustaining commune, engage in a both creative and destructive rather than destructive manner
Also this is more of an afterthought but it is a little gross how the show treats Kuvira. Like the fascist that threw non Earthbenders into camps does not deserve sympathy. Nor does Varrick the heartless capitalist that facilitated her rise, playing a similar role to the capitalists in Nazi Germany deserve a redemption arc. Real fascists create false enemies, that is core to the ideology. The threat must be imagined so to be manipulated for the needs of the state. The jews are both judeo bolshevik communists and capitalist bankers. Kuvira meanwhile is portrayed as simply going "too far" for a justifiable goal which has icky implications. It would be more accurate to history if Kuvira for example hired the bandits to create an existential threat or scapegoated the airbenders as a new danger. The one valid point Kuvira has is that Republic City is very much so a settler colony and the show should confront that more. Perhaps by the end of the season the avatar could facilitate a "right to return" for Earthbenders displaced by the Yu Dao colonies.
