What would the “real world” consequences be to staging a robbery?
Post Body

I am currently writing a script, which is “based on a true story”. The actions in question take place in the early 2000s. Essentially, a high schooler is being bullied by a group of other high schoolers in his neighborhood. One day the bullied kid figures out that his bullies are also drug dealers (specifically oxy) and finds their stash, which is hidden in one of the bully’s parents garage. He breaks in, trashes the place, leaves some drugs and money, then calls the cops pretending to be a concerned neighbor. The police respond, see the drugs and money, assume it is drug-related, and the bullies are arrested.

What would happen if this scenario played out in real life? Would the police figure out that the robbery was staged, and what would it take for the police to figure out who really did it?
