9 months ago, my husband went on a WCB claim after injuring his elbow at work. He has had surgery and has been following his recovery plan, but has had pain and extremely limited use of his arm since then. His doctors agree that this injury is unlikely to improve even with more extensive surgery.
He was told that his work was dodging their calls regarding an inspection, part of the return to work process. In the end, the manager didn't even arrange the meeting - a frustrated team lead of one of the departments set it up. My husbands doctors and therapist wanted him to try returning to work in June or July. They didn't manage to arrange this inspection meeting until today. AFAIK the employer has already been fined by WCB.
The specialist who did the inspection noted that the tools provided were old and needed replacement, and that all the work surfaces were six inches too low to meet health and safety standards, and that employees were being asked to complete tasks outside their job description. Several other employees have also sustained the same injury in the same position since my husband was injured. He suggested that the employees might want to look into legal opinions.
Aside from the substandard work conditions, my husbands earnings have been severely impacted by this. The delay in return to work has effectively stopped him from being able to do anything about our finances. I've had to go back to work also. He won't be able to return to his job and he can't type for prolonged periods so I don't know what his options for retraining realistically are.
This place is a major employer in my town and has several other departments where employees are facing similar conditions and injuries. Fines don't seem to be a deterrent.
What information needs to be collected and who needs to be contacted to prevent this business from continuing to hurt people?
