I own this unit btw. I'll keep the story short and summarized but can add details if necessary.

  • Feb 2020, there was a burst pipe in my condo unit (I live in a 3 floor apartment, 15 units total) which damaged part of the hardwood.

  • The property management sent in their own contractors/ repair and service crew to assess the situation. This was done through point of contact of the property management, no other third party service people were contacted

  • The property Management made an assessment of the damage from the leak, determining that the damage repair was to be covered by them. They stated that the flooring in the area of damage would need to be replaced

  • The Property management brought in several different contractors for the flooring replacement from different companies, since they explicitly stated that the managment / condo building would pay for the damage and not myself, so they wanted to get as good of a rate for the re-flooring as possible.

  • The repairs were completed in May 2020. No invoices were given to me, since again I was never told I would need to pay for anything

Fast forward several months.

The management for the building changed over the summer.

The new management emailed me in December, saying that the CONDO BOARD is requesting payment for me for these repairs in the amount of ~$4500

Now this is where it gets a little messy / confusing. I told them to simply contact the previous property management and they'll confirm that I was told I would NOT pay for any of it. But apparently the previous property management closed down and no longer exists. Additionally, almost all of the communication was through phone calls.

What should I do? I was never given any invoices for any of these repairs/assessment, that would explicitly state I need to pay for the damage. And they are asking for payment for something where not only I was not given receipts/invoices, but also something where a transaction was completed over 6 months ago.
