2 months ago I had my primary doctor give me a referral to our local urologist in order to get a vasectomy. This morning was my consultation, and after 2 months of waiting the urologist asked if I was married, I'm not, and if I have children, I don't. He then informed me that he would not perform the vasectomy on "principle" because he is Catholic and it is his belief that "everyone must provide children for the church, and I won't perform a vasectomy unless you have at least 2 children already.". I'm not catholic, the hospital isn't a catholic hospital and has no religious affiliation. This is the only urologist within an hour drive of my small home town. Is there any laws or regulations against a doctor refusing to perform a procedure due to their religious beliefs? Or at the very least for wasting my time by not informing me of those requirements upfront?
Luckily I found a urologist a little over an hour away that will perform the procedure, but it will be another month at least before I can get in for a consult and then who knows how long until the actual procedure can be scheduled.
