Post Body

Basically the title. This is in rural Oregon.

I rent a decently sized 1br/1bth apartment that has a separate kitchen/dining/living room, as well as an office room. It is one of the most affordable options in my area for its size. It was a single family residence that was DIY converted into 3 units.

I had complained several times about interior moisture and mold smells. Today contractors came out and found out that the entire entryway for two of the units (mine and upstairs) will need to be torn down and replaced, as all of the wood is basically mush and the whole section is falling apart. This also includes my “office” room, which was previously part of said entryway before it was walled in.

Talking to the contractor he said, assuming they’ll pay for repairs, that the entire room will have to be removed and replaced from scratch as it was not built to code.

Obviously this would leave my apartment exposed and unsecured.

Housing is incredibly scarce out here. Most units have month waitlists. I do not have substantial amounts of money to move with.

Am I allowed to break the lease because of this? Am I entitled to any reparations or accommodations instead? My current lease is to August.

Thanks!
