IL - soon to be ex has a ton of student loan debt. Lawyer says judge could force me to take on half that debt. Can’t find anything definitive that supports this.

Post Body

As the title states my soon to be ex has a bunch of student loans. She received her bachelor’s degree many years ago and is still paying the debt off. She did incur the debt while we were married. Everything I can find online says she should be responsible for the debt but my lawyer keeps saying the judge can force me to take on half the debt.

Is this true and if so how is it possible? I thought the only way around student loan debt for the most part was paying it off or dying. She has co-signers on the student loans that are relatives of hers. I’m not a co-signer on any of them.

What are my options?
