Can my boyfriend sue his parents after they’ve repeatedly ignored his mental illness and refuse to take him to a doctor?

Post Body

For context, my boyfriend and I are both 17. He was placed in a psychiatric hospital and diagnosed with severe PTSD-induced-psychosis, DID, and depression. When he was released, the doctors there told his parents he needed to get a primary care doctor as well as a psychiatrist, and prescribed him Abilify.

They never got him the psychiatrist, nor did they keep him on the medicine. The Abilify made him very sick to the point of not being able to go to school, so they just stopped getting it and never went to see a professional to help his ongoing psychosis.

It has been a year and 6 months since he was hospitalized. Before this incident, when he was 13, his parents were forced by a court order from the school to take him to a psychologist after he told a teacher he wanted to commit suicide. He saw the psychologist twice and never was taken back or treated.

His mental illness is so bad that he has had to leave work multiple times, miss school, and his grades are suffering. His parents, instead of getting him a doctor, have told him to cut back on his hours at work and threatened to take away personal property that he bought himself (like his car) if he doesn’t fix his grades. On top of this, he hasn’t seen a dentist since he was 7.

His coworkers have urged him multiple times to take legal action. Does he have a case?
