Lodger owes me 1800

Hi, so I own my house and have been having a friend live with me. He has been here well over 6 months and didn't pay the agreed amount for the time he stayed here. There are many reasons but... I have given him notice I would like him to vacate. He is not paying last months rent so that he may find a place. I had him sign how much he owes me. I am now unsure where to go from here. Do I have to go to small claims court now? Should I get a lawyer for something just under 2000?
