[California] Landlord wants me to pay to clean a common area, I say no

Post Body

So I've been living in a San Francisco apartment for two years and am moving out at the end of September. Upon informing my landlord of this, she mentioned that I need to get the apartment steam cleaned. This includes everything from my apartment door to the hallway leading up to it.

Her reasoning is that I am the only one who uses that hallway since it goes right to my door. I went over the rental agreement and said that area is referred to as the common area. Even if it weren't, there's nothing in the lease that says I have to clean anything outside the apartment. She says she told me this on the first day, which I have no recollection of her ever saying.

When I pointed this out, her emails got very aggressive and belligerent. What's my recourse here? It'll cost me like another $100 to get that part cleaned that I don't think I have to pay. But considering how crazy she's getting about this, maybe I just pay the money so she doesn't try to screw me out of my deposit with something else.

Any advice would be great.
