TL;DR at bottom.
I live in an upscale apartment in Florida, USA, and constantly smell marijuana smoke coming from the downstairs neighbors. I will come home from work, and the smell is right in your face almost as if I have it in my unit. I smell it in the mornings when waking up, in the evenings before bed, etc. It has caught the attention of other tenants in the building and we make passing jokes about how awful the smell is.
This hasn’t been a big deal for me for the most part, except having to explain to my guests that no I’m not a chronic drug user. I don’t think marijuana is that bad and damn sure is safer than alcohol. But regardless it’s illegal where I live and that’s the bottom line.
However, I had a maintenance issue a few days ago and realized that the staff probably assumes I have large amounts of marijuana in the unit or regularly smoke in there. This is a problem for me, as I am not the offender and also work a sensitive job that requires strict following of federal and state laws.
Is this an issue I bring up to the apartment management directly? Or do I need to go to law enforcement. Also what are my rights? I don’t want my name or unit number being mentioned. It’s not something I can no longer ignore, I believe that the proper officials need to be notified of what is going on.
TL;DR: intense marijuana smell invading apartment all hours of the day, I do sensitive work and must strictly follow federal and state laws regarding marijuana. What is the best avenue for resolving the issue and protecting my self? Thanks!
