I'm seeking input here on a specific circumstance as it applies in Indiana (I'm well aware it'll vary by state).
I religiously read my local daily police reports, and lately I've noticed a trend that only in certain areas of town drivers are being stopped when leaving gas stations or other private businesses for "failure to signal".
Im sure we all have memories that have stuck with us for no good reason, and one of mine is from 2000 in my high school drivers ed class, when the teacher made it very clear I didn't need to signal when we left the gas station on our in class driving. (Basically acted like it was dumb for flipping on my blinker leaving the lot).
Reading the IC is no help, since there seems to be conflicting information, as well as being filled with references to repealed statutes. In the beginning, it states the traffic statutes apply statewide, without saying "on public roadway" or anything along those lines. Yet, later on it says that private businesses can contract with the local municipality for traffic enforcement on their lot
So, what exactly is the legality/requirement for signalling when leaving private property. Of course you'd have to signal to turn off of the street into the lot, but my understanding has always been that when on private property entering the road, a signal isn't required?
