Okay, so this hasn't happened yet, but it almost happened to the other night and kind of has me worried. I live in this van that I bought during the pandemic. The registration is almost 2 years out of date. DMV in my area is appointment only but I also don't have the almost $2000 to get it registered. Anyways, the other night at like 3am it almost got towed with me in it. I got out and spoke with the officer and he said he would just give me a warning this time, but I need to get it registered. He said that it is at risk of being towed as long as it's on a public street. So what would happen if I didn't wake up and they towed it with me inside? Could I do anything legally? I live in Oakland, CA. Edit: I understand that they can legally tow me, I just want to know if there's any legal recourse for them Towing it with me asleep inside it. Like, if I were to wake up in a tow yard.
