Car hit in mechanics lot

Post Body

My car was parked with the key placed in the envelope slot in the door for a scheduled appointment. Today (the next day), the mechanic called and asked if the bumper needed repairs. Obviously, we had no idea what he was talking about. He stated the bumper was crumpled on the right rear quarter panel and the tail light was broken. In addition, the front bumper was moved on top of the concrete block in front of the parking space. The car was parked in a lined parking spot in the front of the shop adjacent to the repair door. There is a second spot next to it. Next to the vacant adjacent spot, there is a gated lot for the cars. This was locked when we dropped my car off. The shop is off the โ€œbeatenโ€ path and there is no through traffic. The place has four cameras around the entire lot. We asked to see the film from yesterday. He said he could not get it working. The mechanic states that it needs to go through our insurance. Our agent said that is false, but not sure if that is accurate. Of note, there is no through path. The only reason anyone would drive on that side of the building is to pull a car around to get into the mechanic bay. The only other way would be a person completely losing control on the road and drive right into the car/building. Looking to see what to do. Of note- state is Michigan and city Grand rapids which have odd laws regarding mechanic shops/lots. Thanks
