I am a recruiter in technology staffing in New York City. In late January I interviewed with a great company and went through a rigorous 1 month interview process that lasted through February where I was brought back in person 3 times and even invited to the work happy to meet the team.
I was verbally offered a position (salary, benefits, everything was discussed), two witnesses by my side at the time, and was asked to put in my two weeks notice at the job I had at the time because they wanted me to start as soon as possible. I verbally accepted and was said I would receive new hire paperwork in the next few days. I put in my two weeks notice the next day because I was thrilled at the opportunity.
A week later I hadn’t received anything so I sent an email and was told they were just waiting on a signature from the CEO but the email also told me I would have a definite start date of March 2nd.
Fast forward the Friday before March 2nd, my two weeks is already over and I’m waiting to start the new positive, I still haven’t received anything so I called. They told me the CEO had been out of office they are so sorry but March 2 would probably have to be pushed and they are just waiting for the paperwork to come back from HQ...now I’m upset but was assured that the following week I’d have it in my inbox the middle of the next week at the latest.
That date passes and now I’m upset because I didn’t hear back when I was promised a returned answer. I called and they said they still had nothing and I pressed clearly knowing something was odd. They told me they now didn’t know if they had the budget to accommodate my salary (First time I am hearing of this). They apologize saying how much they want me on the team blah blah blah and that they’re still waiting. I tell them at this point I am not working because they told me to leave my job because I’d be starting the 2nd. She said she understands and promises to get back to me ASAP.
The next week...BOOM Coronavirus and now it’s been almost impossible for me to find a job in my field. Obviously the company isn’t even thinking of me at the moment.
I want to sue the shit out of them. I’m jobless now because of them. Do I have a case? Any shot?
