I work at a facility that cares for children that have been removed from their homes due to abuse. They live at the facility and receive 24/7 supervision and support from us.
There's a concern with the outbreak we could have a lot of our staff laid out and sick which means no supervision for the kids. We've been told that, if the outbreak gets worse we may have to stay at work. As in stay a the facility 24-7 and not leave.
It's not clear if we'd be considered working any time we're not asleep or if we'd work our normal length shifts and just be expected to entertain ourselves if we weren't on shift.
How would this be reflected in a paycheck in terms of hours worked and overtime?
Some additional points to consider:
Hiring additional staff isn't an option. These children are considered at-risk and as such not just anybody can work with them. People have to be trained and background checked to be able to do it and that process takes time. It's also a process that's been almost stopped because of the outbreak.
The priority is to ensure that staff stay healthy in order to ensure the children have people there to keep them safe. We've already suspended visits, off-site activities, and we keep non-agency personnel to a minimum.
