Hi folks, a little background here before I get into the knitty gritty. I'm in the US, located in Michigan
I had a student loan through SallieMae, dated and paid off a few years ago. I have not spoken to my older brother in ages and we are a bit estranged. I have no idea about his personal life or what hes doing.
SallieMae just called me a few hours ago saying "hi, we have you listed as a possible contact for [redacted], we are trying to reach him on behalf of his student loan and were wondering if you could pass a message along to him?"
Now, I had no idea he even had student loans through them, and I have no idea where he even is at this point in time so I cut them off and let them know that I was not a cosigner or legal guardian involved in his financial care, so do not call me again.
My question for everyone is: Is this even legal? Like they did not even confirm my identity or anything, granted I answered with Hi this is [Redacted] is there something I can assist you with? But the whole situation feels shady.
