TL;DR: Nice house has rats, I want out,
We moved into this house in late August. Itâs probably the nicest house weâve lived in since we got married- fancy neighborhood and in an awesome school district. In October I noticed a loose roof tile and that there always seemed to be tons of squirrels in the yard- later that day I heard a thumping above my daughterâs room and thought just maybe we should have pest control come out and see whatâs up. Per our lease all pest control is up to us. Pest guy comes, opens the attic, shines his light around and closes the hatch real quickly...seems our attic is infested with âa fuckton of ratsâ he also saw older traps up there, probably from a previous tenant. This goes beyond the scope of what our responsibility is per the lease so we turn it over to the rental agency.
It took them a week to send someone who set outside traps, another week past that to send someone to go into the attic for traps and clean up and ANOTHER week past that to send a crew to seal up any holes, entrances, anyplace a rodent could possibly get it. After they sealed the attic but before they sealed all the outside areas they started coming into the house. By this time we had anticipated this and purchased traps- we caught 4 very large rats on consecutive days. Once the outside was sealed everything went quiet through the holidays.
2 weeks ago I was putting my daughter to sleep and I heard scraping and scratching on the siding just outside her window, upon inspection almost the entire length of that side of the house the siding is bowed and I could fit my entire arm up there. We call the agency and let them know. Finally someone showed up today to inspect the siding and the attic. They tracked down the siding and placed more attic traps and outside traps. The rats have chewed through the seals on the garage and pulled out the stuffing that was sealing our dryer vent (which is how we think they got into the main house). Talking to the pest guy he pretty much said with an infestation like this itâs going to be ongoing without serious aggression, which the rental agency doesnât appear to be taking. We pay a ridiculous amount in rent for this house and Iâm disgusted just sitting in it. I spend large amounts of my day disinfecting my kitchen just in case and vigorously sweeping and vacuuming anywhere food could have possibly gone.
So SUPER long story short do we have any recourse as far as getting our lease terminated or even asking for a reduction in rent (which honestly I just want to move)?
