Mom left my dad tons of debt after she passed away

My dad just told me that my mom left about 10k in debt after she passed. Seems like some of it is just credit cards that she left, but the problem is these credit cards are under his name, but I don’t think he knew about it. Is there anything we (he) can do to clear all, if not some, of this up?
