Signed a sublease for one room in an apartment that starts on Jan 1st and already paid 1st months rent, but the condition of the unit currently is no way acceptable . It seems the sublessor never bothered to clean his washroom or his share of common areas during the time he was living in the unit. Additionally all the common areas and floors are filthy to the point that they are practically unusable.
My agreement does specify that the unit must be clean, but doesn't define "Clean" and what should happen if the unit isn't cleaned. The sublessor claims the room is clean in his opinion and isn't his responsibility to provide a clean washroom, kitchen, etc.
Overall, the condition is pretty bad. I doubt the tenant is going to clean everything by tomorrow and I have very little desire to clean someones months old mess. Since my sublease explicitly mentions the whole apartment unit and requires the tenant to clean the unit to an acceptable condition, can I hire a cleaning service and deduct the costs of cleaning from next months rent?
