My dad died last week in a motel in Lexington. We did not find out until we couldn't get ahold of him and called the motel he was staying at, who told us his body was found in his room on the 20th of May. A family member went to pick up his belongings from the coroner and all he was brought in with were a pair of pants with a nickel in the pocket.
I know for a fact he had a backpack/carry-on with a few changes of clothes, his wallet, his phone, and a gold ring and necklace. The motel claims they have none of his possessions. It seems that someone stole these items between discovering the body and calling in the coroner.
Needless to say, I'm heartbroken and have no idea what to do. I'm still grieving and can't even stomach making these calls. I'm planning to file a police report tomorrow but I don't know if they will take me seriously. Is there any other recourse? He was indigent and had nothing of value other than the ring & necklace. Phone was a shitty flip phone and he had only 34$ in his checking account when he died. But I'm heartbroken with nothing left to remember him by, and sick to my stomach at the thought of some rando stealing his belongings from his corpse. I have no family in the town he died in and all of our immediate family members are scattered, minimum 2000 miles away from Lexington. Is this actually a thing?? Are people that disgusting? What do I do? Please help me.
