Hey guys! So I live in Minneapolis, MN. The security deposit in question is for my old place in St. Paul.
-TL;DR: Old roommates haven't returned our security deposit, its been close to 40 days. Do I send a notarized bill? Do I call the cops? Do I call the landlord (its a company who owns the property)?
I'll try and sum this up quickly. My girlfriend & I were on a lease with two other people at a house in St. Paul, we gave our roommates 3 months notice for moving out, landlord the required 2 months notice. (Move out was supposed to be June 30th, ended up being July 31st) Roommates asked us to stay another month until they could find someone to replace us, and we were told the landlord was fine with this. We did.
Its been over a month now since we moved out, I was initially told that our Security Deposits would be given back to us by our roommates mid-September, they had difficulty finding new roommates and the date was moved to "First week of October" or, what one of the new roommates told me via text "By Oct. 7th." I shot the three of them (two old roomies, one new) a text today and haven't heard back from them.
My gf & I are getting a little worried now, and I'd rather be proactive about taking legal action if need be, rather than waiting 6 months and then deciding to take this to court. I don't really want to take it to court, as we're still on friendly terms with our old roommates, but they owe us about $900, and we need that money.
Basically I need advice on what to do, specifically, to ensure I get the money back.
Additional details: Also everything I've said so far I was told has been by my past roommates, I haven't contacted the rental company yet.
We'd actually gotten all our stuff out July 28th, the new tenant M, asked if he could move in a couple days early, I said that's fine as long as he paid me for the extra 3 days. (He was taking my room)
The way our lease was set up, as far as I know, one of our other roommates was the "Lease holder" so she was in charge of making contact with the landlord etc. So personally I've had minimal contact with the landlord. (The landlord is just an agent of a rental company)
Thanks guys! Please feel free to ask for questions if you need clarification.
