My wife and I are trying to rent a property in homestead, florida. The homeowner's association has asked my wife and I to provide: pay check stubs, police clearance letter, an income tax return, credit report, copy of driver's license, vehicle registrations, three reference letters, and now our marriage certificate because apparently everything listed above didn't prove we're married. We've never been asked to provide so much documentation for ANYTHING in our lives and we've dealt with immigration for my wife and I've dealt with customs and border patrol, fbi, and local state police for clearance to work at my job. Our concern is that we're literally handing over everything pertaining to our identity and the identity of our children and are getting no answer as to what they're doing or going to do with all of it. Is it legal for them to request all of this from us? We want to pull out of trying to rent this place now but the realtor for the landlord told us that they can keep our initial deposit if we do because it would constitute a loss for their client. Is that legal as well? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've only just moved to Florida this is literally my second week here. fellow redditors, we need your help! Please and thanks you!
P.S. sorry about the format I'm typing this on my phone from work.
