My girlfriends mom is getting a divorce, she's not super familiar with the US legal system so in general she doesnt know her options. She was given divorce papers, but they aren't fair and now her husband isn't wanting to change them at all and threatened to not support their move if she doesn't sign.
What are the realistic options when dealing with 2 people that probably wont come to an agreement naturally. Is the only way hiring a divorce attorney ? Their current divorce process was handled by some online service and only her husband has had access to talking to the company aside from when she needs to give her information. So she wants to be able to make adjustments and go back to him with the request. I would think the only way she gets what's fair is if a judge made the final decision but I dont know how much back and forth it takes before getting there.
If her only option is going through a lawyer what are things to keep in mind when price of a lawyer? If it isn't a super complicated case is a competent attorney enough to just speak on her behalf ? It's mostly about the money, and she's not trying to take everything she can, only what she needs. He also isn't fighting hard on child custody nor do they have any assets aside from cars. Sorry if the question is at all dumb.
